There is quality, there’s quantity and there is Tems. Her fresh unique sound and vocal delivery has seen her become one of the most sought after voice in the music scene despite having just three official singles in her discography.
Temilade Openiyi also known as Tems, is a Njgerian artiste whose sound is a fusion of alternative and R&B. She is also a songwriter and a producer. Despite the music scene being dominated by Afropop, afrobeats etc, her sound has added a breathe of fresh air to the scene which has created a fantastic niche for herself and a fast growing fan base who are known as the ‘rebels’.
With the current nature, system and culture of the Nigeria music industry, being an independent artiste is a tall order considering the immense financial investment that comes with recording, branding and promoting your art without any external factor, but Tems has beaten the odds gaining huge success over a short period of time despite not being signed to a record label(even though we read on social media that she declined offers from top recording companies)
Tems draws her inspiration from God. Listening to Destiny Child’s, Beyonce, Asa, Frank Ocean and lil Wayne while growing up also influenced her type and sound of music. We will like to see her team up with Asa in the future to bless us with a track or two.
Her smashing single ‘Try Me’ which is a follow up to ‘Mr Rebel & Looku Looku’ has gained massive airplays and has gathered over 1.5 million views on YouTube, also topping various music charts. There is quality, there is quantity and there is Tems. Her fresh unique sound and voice dexterity has seen her become one of the most sought after voice in the scene. No wonder TheGreatKhalid had to feature her alongside Davido in the remix of ‘Know your Worth’
Outside Music, Tems is perceived to have a nerd and goofy personality. Some sections of her fans has complained of her absenteeism on social media. She has a knack for weird stuff and she is also a fantastic crotchet designer. If Music wasn’t her first choice, she would have gone full time into making crotchets full time. “ I like fashion, I like crocheting, I am trying to get a brand, clothing wise. My focus has basically been going into creating a clothing line, I am setting up and working on that”.
She has a huge appreciation and respect for her family and also Show Dem Camp who she sees as her brothers. Tems has been featured on SDC tracks but ‘Tales by Moonlight’ from the ‘PalmWine Express’ album blew everyone away because of her vocal performance and delivery. She bagged a 2019 Headies HipHop World awards nomination in the Best Vocal Performance Category for Mr Rebel.
She is certainly one who will linger in the lips of fans for a long time and hopefully her debut album will drop before the year ends because we are eagerly anticipating one.
