The money spinning Uefa Champions League will be back in August after the unexpected interruption from Covid-19 with some mouth watering fixtures that will excite both the fans and neutrals. Although there will be no second legs from the Quarter-final stages and fans at the stadium because of the Pandemic.
All these factors won’t put a dent on the electrifying atmosphere that erupt whenever the heavenly anthem is being rendered.
RB LEIPZIG, ATLÉTI, PSG and ATALANTA are guaranteed Quater finalists and will be joined by the aggregate winners of the second leg fixtures between Madrid Vs Manchester City, Barca vs Napoli, Bayern vs Chelsea and Juventus vs Lyon
Back in February, RealMadrid fell to a 1 – 2 home defeat in the hands of Pep and will be hoping for a miracle in the second leg. Post Lockdown, Zidane has rejuvenated the side who haven’t lost a game since LaLiga resumed and are in pole position to win their third laliga title in 10 years.
Real Madrid have lost a knockout tie after losing the first leg at home on five different occasions. 0 – 1 PSG (1994), 0 – 1 Bayern (2001), 0 – 1 Arsenal (2006), 0 – 1 Liverpool (2009), 0 – 2 Barca (2011). The last time they over turned such situation was in 1970.
With their defence maestro Sergio Ramos out of the second leg due to a red card, they’d need to dig deeper and come up with the unthinkable in order to pull a surprise win over Pep’s side at the empty Etihad stadium.
Mr Champions League Cristiano Ronaldo will be seeking to over turn a first leg defeat to Lyon when they clash on 07/08/2020 in to book a place in the Quater finals.
Juve who are in cruise control to win the league have hit fine form since the Serià resumed inspired by brilliant performances from Dybala and Ronaldo.
Cristiano Ronaldo who left Madrid as a legend after winning 4 UCLs in five years might clash with his former employers in the one legged Quater final tie in Portugal if both teams overcome City and Lyon respectively.
This is a tall order especially for RealMadrid who have a more difficult fixture. A potential Ronaldo vs Madrid tie in the next stage will definitely create more buzz and excitement for the footballing world.
Pep has not won the money spinning Uefa Champions league since 2011 despite trying with Bayern and now City. They face a potential two year ban from the competition for financial doping, however, his team will be seeking to end the season on a high with winning the UCL.
Unfortunately, City are on the most difficult part of the draws, if they triumph over Madrid, they face a brick wall against Europe’s past UCL winners in Chelsea, Bayern, Barca or Juventus in the Quater and Semis stage.
This might also be a reunion for Pep against his former side Barca if ManCity and Barça get to the semis stage.
BAYERN OR CHELSEA
Bayern are overwhelming favorite to win this year’s title. They had a perfect record in the group stage and also the highest goal scorer of this season UCL in their attack.
Down but not out, Chelsea will be seeking a miracle to over turn a 0-3 home defeat when they travel to Germany for the second leg. Bayern who recently retained the Bundesliga title are in imperious form inspired by in forn striker Lewandowski going into this game.
Lampard’s team will need four unreplied goals to skip pass Bayern and await the winner between Napoli vs Barcelona in the other fixture.
AN UNDERDOG FINALIST
The Money spinning Uefa Champions League will have a team who have never tasted victory in this season’s finals . One of PSG, Atleti, Atalanta and Leipzig will surely make it to the finals.
Fresh from defeating the Defending champions Liverpool, ATLÉTI have a clearer chance of reaching a third final in six years with only PSG, Leipzig and ATALANTA as a stumbling block.
Atléti’s record against German teams favours them when they take on Leipzig. If they proceed, whoever they face in the semis will have their hands full against this rugged and aggressive wide.
Cash kings PSG have been gifted a favourable tie in the other schedule of the draws. They face one of the most attacking sides in Atalanta.
PSG have more than enough firepower in their Arsenal to make this season finals as they might never get it on a platter again if they flutter this opportunity.
Leipzig who are debutant at this stage of the competition might be without thier best player Werner who was snatched up by Chelsea. It will take more than conviction and compromise to convince Timo to feature in the game against Atléti before traveling to the Stamford bridge.
Atalanta have greatly being the cinderella story in the UCL especially after a superb dismantling of Valencia. They have scored the most goals in Europe this season and will be slugging it out against a relatively strong side in PSG
All though their frigile and vulnerable defense might impede their quest, they will be a strong opponent to any team they encounter
As Europe elites battle it out for the title, the usual suspects who have won it in the past will be the favourites to once again taste the UCL victory.
However, despite the Pandemic depriving fans from being in the stadium and getting a two legged tie, it will be unusual to witness an outsider who have never lifted the trophy before win it in an unusual and unbalanced year tainted with the pandemic.
